New York City is a city of action. Even in the rain, the concrete jungle is flooded with a sea of umbrellas as brave souls navigate the maze of tall skyscrapers. No matter the time of day or even the season, the Big Apple provides many choices for the health-focused individual to find a way to keep active, have fun and pursue wellness.
Walking Tours
Stray Boots was founded in 2008 under the idea that typical sightseeing would be more fun if it was made into a game. A year later, the company launched New York: The Game, a scavenger type interactive game conducted through cell phones. Activate your ticket on your phone and receive clues to start your journey. You'll tackle different challenges like finding specific objects, taking funny photos or interacting with other New Yorkers. You can play just for fun or compete against other teams for a spot on Stray Boots' leader board.
This game covers 10 zones of game play in the city, even spots that are off the beaten path. The three-day museum ticket is ideal for a rainy day. It covers the large Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known as the Met, as well as the Natural Museum of History. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Recreational Centers
The largest indoor rock climbing wall in the city is located at The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers. It features a main wall that's 46 feet high and 100 feet wide and an adjacent bouldering wall that's 10 feet high and 73 feet wide. Any experience level is welcome. However, experienced climbers might find the 55-foot-high, over-hung competition roof especially challenging. Classes are offered in private and semi-private environments.
Off the Beaten Path
If ordinary activities like tennis don't tickle your fancy, try the Trapeze School of New York. This school offers indoor instruction for anyone who wants to learn acrobatic skills on the trapeze. Classes for beginners include skills like take offs and knee hangs, even falling safely onto the net at the completion of every flight. Trapeze School of New York also offers fitness training in various forms from the trapeze to balance and even a trampoline, all with a dedication to safety.
Fitness Spa
When the weather turns sour, treat yourself to a day at the spa. New York Metro lists Equinox Wellness Spa as the spot to get the best sports massage, which is handy because the spa also has workout facilities on the premises. You can go straight from kickboxing to a hot stone massage. Everything from martial arts to pool programs and cycling are available, including personal fitness trainers. The spa itself offers sports massages, facials and even hair removal.
Healthy Restaurants
Even fast food gets a healthy makeover with The Energy Kitchen, which offers a high-protein menu devoid of beef and anything deep fried. According to its website, nothing on the eatery's casual dining menu is more than 500 calories. The Energy Kitchen offers a vegetarian-friendly menu with entrees like a 351-calorie veggie burger and sides like mashed sweet potatoes, asparagus salad and a corn and edamame salad.
