Located in the northwest corner of Mississippi, Tunica is known for its somewhat mild year-round weather, making it an excellent choice for camping. Although Tunica is one of the largest gaming areas in the United States, there are a variety of outdoor activities you can enjoy during your visit to the area.
Camping Options
The camping options in Tunica, Mississippi are primarily privately owned RV campgrounds. The Hollywood Casino Tunica not only features a full-service hotel and casino, but also an RV park for visitors. There are 123 spaces that can accommodate RVs of any size. Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall also offers RV camping sites. It has 100 sites, with 15 pull-through spaces, for larger RVs. Harrah's Mid-South RV Park offers 200 sites, with both pull-through and back-in spaces to facilitate rigs of all sizes.
Amenities
Most of the private campgrounds offer the standard park amenities, including full hookups, wireless Internet availability, restrooms and shower facilities. Hollywood Casino not only has full hookups, but also cable television, telephones and propane at each site. It also has a shower and laundry facility you can use during your stay. Sam's Town offers barbecue grills and picnic tables at each site. Harrah's not only has full hookups, but wireless Internet, cable television, an on-site lodge for gatherings and a convenience store.
Campground Activities
Along with the standard amenities offered at most campgrounds, there are several activities to keep you busy throughout your vacation. At Hollywood Casino, you'll also enjoy the 18-hole championship golf course, River Bend Links, designed by Clyde Johnston. You can get your daily workout in with Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall's fully equipped fitness center, featuring treadmills, stationary bikes, stair climbers and a universal gym. Harrah's Mid-South RV Park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including a 2,000 square foot pool, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and shuffleboard courts.
St. Francis National Forest
Just across the border into Arkansas is St. Francis National Forest, which offers tent camping as well as RV sites. With 1.2 million acres, you can pitch a tent, bring your RV or roll out your sleeping bag and sleep under the stars. There are several campsites from which to choose. Some, such as Blanchard Springs and Cove Lake, are open year-round. Others are only open from May through September. Be sure to check the forest's website before you go. While there, you can spend the day fishing in the numerous streams and lakes or hike the many trails. Blanchard Springs Cavern is a popular exploring destination, although check ahead to ensure it's open to the public as many caverns close in an effort to protect the bat population.
Other Area Activities
With its location on the Mississippi River, you'll have easy access to a variety of water activities. Fishing, boating and jet skiing are great ways to spend your vacation. You can also spend the day exploring Tunica RiverPark. This 168-acre facility not only includes a museum and an interpretive center revealing the history of the Mississippi, but also includes nature trails, an observation deck and a variety of outdoor exhibits. Bring your clubs to Tunica, too, because the city has tournament level golf courses such as Tunica National, to challenge golfers of every skill level.
