Atlantic City, New Jersey, may be known for the glitz, glamor and gambling, but there are many other healthy activities that you can participate in while camping. You can spend some time on the beach and visit other attractions in the area. The summer months bring many festivals and special events.
When to Go--Climate
Atlantic City is known for its cold winters, mild springs, hot summers and cool falls. Winter temperatures get down to 22 degrees Fahrenheit at night and 41 degrees during the day in January. Spring temperatures range from 50 to 70 degrees during the day and 30 to 50 degrees at night. Summertime is often hot with temperatures reaching 85 degrees in July with lows of 65 degrees. The most popular tourist season in Atlantic City is the summertime because of the temperatures.
Bicycle Trails
There are many places you can ride your bicycle, including trails and the boardwalk. You can ride your bike on the seven-mile boardwalk during the early morning hours. Watch for posted signs. The Atlantic County Bikeway, which is just over seven and a half miles, is made of asphalt and is a multi-use trail. Other area trails include the 12.2-mile Estell Manor Park Trail which is partially paved and the six-mile Linwood Bikeway which runs from Pleasantville to Somers Point.
Daytime Activities
Other daytime activities in Atlantic City include walking along the seven-mile boardwalk, or getting up close and personal with the creatures of the sea at the Atlantic City Aquarium. You can also hop on a whale watching or sightseeing cruise. If you are an adventure seeker, fasten your straps and go para-sailing over the ocean. Other activities to keep you in shape include surfing or boogie boarding, jetskiing or visiting one of the area's local health clubs.
Private Campgrounds
The Shady Pines RV Resort is the closest campground to Atlantic City, at six miles away. Here you can take a dip in the pool, play a game of horseshoe or shuffleboard or feast away in the picnic area. At night, roast marshmallows as you sing around a campfire. Other facilities include ice, showers, restroom and laundry facilities.
The Pomona RV Resort & Campground is located just 10 minutes from the heart of Atlantic City. Here you can relax in the hot tub, swim in the extra large pool, watch the kids squeal with delight as they play on the playground, or cook dinner over your own fire pit. Other facilities include free showers, free wireless Internet, free cable television hookups, laundry room, dump station and planned family activities such as hayrides.
Nearby State Park
The Wharton State Forest offers visitors a place to stay the night as well as a glimpse into history. Be sure to visit Batsto Village and Harrisville Village to learn how people lived in the 1800s. Activities in the park include hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, swimming and camping. Overnight camping, campsites and cabins are available.
