Freeport is located along the southern Atlantic coast of Maine, roughly 20 miles from Portland, Maine, and 125 miles from Boston, Massachusetts. The area offers tours of lighthouses, outdoor recreational sports, sandy beaches and a lively nightlife. Freeport also overlooks the upper portion of the Casco Bay, which provides campers with swimming, kayaking and hiking trails.

Geography

The summer temperature in the Freeport area is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Freeport is located about two hours north of Boston, Massachusetts, making it easy for campers to find campgrounds off the Interstate 95 and 295 freeways, as well as U.S. 1. The Freeport region includes forests, a salt marsh estuary and the rocky shorelines on Casco Bay.

Types

The Freeport area has more than 20 campgrounds scattered around the city and south toward Portland. These campgrounds vary in size and facilities. Some campgrounds are resort-size campgrounds on 300 acres with more than 170 tent sites as well as sites for RVs and cabin rentals. The resort-size campgrounds also may have gift shops, on-site golf courses and live entertainment. The Freeport area also has a few smaller campgrounds that have only 20 or 30 tent sites. These are located about 4 to 8 miles north of the city. The campgrounds are a combination of tent sites, RV sites and cabin rentals.

Features

Campgrounds feature water, electric hookups, Internet access, RV hookups, dumping stations and grocery stores. Some campgrounds also have fire rings, grills, picnic tables, firewood, ice machines and laundry facilities. Campgrounds on the beach have marinas or boat ramps. The bigger parks also have snack bars and restrooms with showers. The resort-size campgrounds may have on-site restaurants, live entertainment pavilions, shuttle service, propane filling stations and 24-hour security gates. Pets are welcomed but must be leashed at all times. Some campgrounds may charge a fee for the pet to stay, as well as specify size and breed.

Freeport Activities

The Freeport area features quaint shops, outlets, museums, beaches, coastal hiking and kayaking opportunities for exploring the islands in Casco Bay. Freeport also offers festivals and fairs, golf courses and ferries to the local islands. Within Freeport, Winslow Park--a city park and recreational center--holds a Seaside Camp for children 7 to 10 years old. The children learn about sea life as well as kayaking skills, games, crafts, swimming; barbecues and sporting contests also are planned. The park also features a 5K and 10K race in June as well as a triathlon in September. Winslow Park also holds evening concerts and a summer Family Fun Day with games, ice cream and hot dogs.

Campground Activities

Many campgrounds support activities such as concerts, fishing, crabbing and pool swimming. A few also have bikes, kayaks and paddleboats for rent. Other campgrounds have lighted playgrounds, basketball courts, recreations rooms or game rooms. Activities within the Freeport area include mini golf, volleyball, horseshoes, bay cruises, golf courses, kayak tours and historical museums.

Camping season

Most of the small campgrounds in the Freeport area are open May through September. Commercial campgrounds open in mid-May and depending on the weather, close at the end of October. The peak camping season for Maine is July and August. During the peak season, reservations are required.
