What Causes Frequent Urination in Women?

For women the need to urinate frequently can be a hassle. There is no pulling over on the side of the road and running behind a tree. More often than not, the need to urinate is followed by a frantic search for the nearest restroom. But why do some women need to urinate more frequently than others? More often than not it is a symptom of something that is not related to gender.

Urinary Tract Infection

The most common cause of frequent urination in females is a urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections cause the bladder to become inflamed. This inflammation leaves less room in the bladder for storing urine, thus the need to urinate is more frequent, and quite often painful. Since the urethra is shorter in women than in men, and closer to the anus, women tend to get UTIs more often.

Caffeine

Believe it or not, that cup of java from the local coffee house and the two cans of cola you guzzled before lunch can cause you to urinate more frequently. Caffeine stimulates the kidneys, causing them to be overactive, thus moving along any liquids that hit the system more quickly.

Pregnancy

This is obviously a cause of frequent urination reserved strictly for the ladies. Because the uterus walls sit in such close proximity to the bladder, it's not uncommon for pregnant females to have to urinate frequently, more and more as time goes on and the baby gets larger. The fetus will continue to take up more space, leaving little room for the bladder.
