Your hands are your most important weapons in your arsenal as a boxer. Your hands will need more support than just the padding in the gloves to prevent injury. Hand wraps provide support for the wrist and thumb and protect the metacarpals and tendons. Apply the hand wrap properly to get the most out of the hand wrap.
Step 1
Wrap a smaller hand with 120-inch hand wrap. Wrap a large hand with 170-inch or longer hand wraps.
Step 2
Unravel the hand wrap. Lay the fabric fastener end upwards. Place your palm facing up. Put your thumb through the loop at the end opposite the fabric fastener. Run the wrap along the back of your hand.
Step 3
Wrap the hand wrap starting 2 inches down the wrist ending just short of the palm.
Step 4
Wrap the hand wrap around the thumb creating a figure eight. Repeat this step.
Step 5
Flip your hand over so that the back of your hand is facing you. Pull firmly on the wrap and stretch it across the hand and through the fourth and fifth finger. Pull the wrap firmly downwards and around the wrist ending on the back of the hand. Repeat the same wrapping technique in between the third and fourth, and second and third finger.
Step 6
Wrap the excess wrap around your hand working up towards the knuckles.
Step 7
Secure the hand wrap using the fabric fastener sewn to the handwrap. Apply a strip of athletic tape to the end of the hand wrap If you are using Mexican style handwrap so that it does not slip off.
Tips and Warnings
- Lay the hand wraps out flat to dry. Apply a fabric refresher to help with odor. Wash the handwraps in a mesh bag. If you box often, purchase more than one set of hand wraps. Don't worry if the fabric fastener is not facing down as you are wrapping your hand. The wrap can be flipped over to assure that you are able to secure it.
- Check the fit of the hand wrap making sure it is not to loose or too tight. If either of these conditions exist, unravel the hand wrap and start from the beginning.
