Camping offers a chance for friends and family to gather and share time building relationships and enjoying one another's company. An important aspect of any camping trip is the food that everyone brings. Making it fun---for both kids and adults--will allow for a chance to enjoy a meal together.
Trail Mix
Trail mix can be fun to make as a group---so everyone should be asked to contribute their own ingredients. You can even incorporate differen themes, such as tropical or energy. For a tropical trail mix, people can bring tropical-related snack items, such as coconut, gummy fish, hard tropical-shaped candies, nuts and dried pineapple. Yogurt-covered raisins, sesame seeds, dark chocolate candies or dried fruit can make up an energy mix. Toss the mix together and place it in baggies or plastic containers for storage.
Hobo Dinner
Hobo dinners are fun meals to create while camping. Ingredients must be brought from home to create the meal. Each camper can bring their favorite vegetables and meat, such as hamburger or bratwurst, onions, potatoes, green peppers, zucchini slices, carrots or eggplant. Ingredients are put in an aluminum foil pocket and then set on hot coals until cooked through---typicall around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the ingredients. Hobo dinners can also be created vegetarian style.
Popcorn
Popcorn is always a fun food to make over the campfire. Popcorn can be prepared over the hot coals. One way to do this is to place the popcorn in two aluminum pie tins that are sealed and then placed over the hot fire. A small amount of oil is placed with the popcorn to create lubrication for popping. The pans are lightly shaken over the flames until the popping is complete.
Pie Irons
Pie irons are a great tool that can be used to prepare camp food. They can be used to create pizzas, sandwiches or desserts. Everyone can make their own creation with pie irons. Bring bread, pizza sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese for the pizzas; ham, cheese, turkey and tomato for sandwiches; and apple or cherry pie filling and cream cheese for dessert.
Sweets
Sweet foods are great to take camping. A variation of s'mores allows for campers to choose their own toppings. Graham crackers can be used as the "sandwich" and other ingredients can be set out "cafeteria" style for campers to choose from. Ingredients may include marshmallows, bananas, marshmallow fluff, flavored jellies, chocolate, mini candy bars, caramels, peanut butter, cookies, fruit, cream cheese or gummy candy.
