You're awoken from a deep slumber. It's not a noise in the house. It's your need to urinate. Too often, as we get older, we find that nighttime is the right time to have to get up and go to the bathroom. The causes of frequent nighttime urination (nocturia) are generally no different than those that haunt people by day, and can be anything from old age to health problems.
Nocturia
For most people, urine becomes concentrated during the nighttime hours when they're asleep. But not so in people with nocturia. Instead, they feel an urge to urinate not just once, but often, two or three times during the course of the sleep cycle. Nocturia is most common in men and can be traced to a variety of disorders in the prostate gland.
Urinary Tract Infection
This is the most common cause of frequent urination, whether it's the middle of the night or the middle of the day. People with a urinary tract infection have an inflamed bladder that makes it not only painful at times to urinate, but also diminishes the storage capacity of the bladder.
Bladder Cancer
One of the least common reasons why people urinate more at night is bladder cancer. Since the cancer is tumorous, it tends to take up space previously reserved for human waste. Because of this, the need to urinate is more frequent.
