Age spots and growths appear on your skin when you have exposed your skin to the sun often over a number of years. Age spots mainly strike people who are over the age of 40, but they can form at any age. The age spots and growths on your skin form when your body increases its production of melanin. Melanin is the chemical in your skin that makes it look darker. When you are out in the sun for too long, you soak up harmful UV rays, which break down the collagen and elastin in your skin. Collagen and elastin are chemicals that keep your skin looking young. Without them, your skin is more susceptible to age spots. However, there are ways to get rid of your age spots and growths. The key is exfoliating your skin, staying out of the sun, and using the right protective and lightening products.
Step 1
Use the right medication. The Mayo Clinic recommends several over-the-counter medications to get rid of your age spots. However, you must make sure the creams contain retinoids, steroids, or bleach. If those medications don’t work, see your dermatologist for a stronger medication. Tretinoin and hydroquinone are the two most common products used to get rid of age spots and growths.
Step 2
Stay out of the sun. The number one reason you get age spots is because of UV exposure, so you must stay out of the sun if you want to get rid of them. If you have to be in direct sunlight, cover up as much of your skin as you can. Wear a hat, long sleeves, long pants, and sunglasses. Also wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more.
Step 3
Exfoliate your skin. Buy a loofah or skin scrubber and the next time you take a bath or shower, scrub the area of your skin with the sun spots. This removes the top layer of your skin, the layer that contains all the dead skin. Your dead skin contains the highest amount of melanin, so you can make your sun spots lighter by exfoliating.
Step 4
Soak your skin with buttermilk. Buttermilk contains a natural bleach that, over time, can help fade your age spots and growths. Buttermilk helps your skin cells grow at a faster rate, which replaces the damaged cells around your age spots. Dip a cotton ball in a bowl of buttermilk and rub over your dark spots. Let the buttermilk soak until dry and then rinse.
