Though nearly 99 percent of all new cases of breast cancer affect women, men are still susceptible to developing this form of cancer, explain health professionals with the Ohio State University Medical Center. Men who have a family history of breast cancer or who have been exposed to radiation or estrogen are at the highest risk of developing breast cancer symptoms. Men who experience breast cancer symptoms should seek further evaluation and care from a physician as soon as possible.

Nipple Discharge

A man who develops abnormal, liquid discharge from his nipples may have breast cancer, warns MedlinePlus, a health information website established by the National Institutes of Health. Affected men may notice small, unusual spots of fluid on their shirts caused by nipple discharge. This discharge from the nipples can appear clear or may contain blood.

Nipple Changes

If one or both nipples are abnormally pulled into the breast or chest, a symptom called nipple retraction, an affected man may have breast cancer, explains Cancer Research UK, a cancer charity based in the United Kingdom. The nipple can appear unusually puckered and may look red or irritated.

Breast Lump or Swelling

A man with breast cancer can notice the appearance of an unusual, firm lump or mass beneath the surface of the skin along the chest or breast, explains Macmillan Cancer Support. Certain men can also develop lumps beneath their armpits. The palpable masses can be accompanied by swelling of the affected breast tissues. If this occurs, men with breast cancer may notice that their chests or breast tissues appear uneven or misshapen.

Breast Skin Lesions

A breast skin lesion can appear across the skin as a symptom of breast cancer in men, according to Cancer Research UK. The skin sore can appear red and inflamed and may be painful or uncomfortable.
