Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing through the hands. While you can perform Reiki anywhere, with the client in a chair, on the floor, or on a bed, most Reiki practitioners prefer to give Reiki sessions on a Reiki table. Reiki tables are very similar to massage tables, but they are specifically meant for Reiki sessions.
Function
The most important function of the table is for your client to be comfortable during the session, since the person needs to be relaxed to receive the full benefits of Reiki. For you as the practitioner, it is important to decide whether you will be traveling from client to client or keeping the table in one place. If you will be traveling, consider a folding, portable Reiki table, which can be put in a carrying case for easy travel. In this case, a good weight to choose is 26 to 28 lbs.
Size
Reiki tables can vary in size, from all angles. Reiki tables are usually 26 to 36 inches high. Choose a table height that will reduce strain on your back and consider whether you will want to sit. An adjustable table is a good solution. Tables also come in different widths, and some have arm rests. Tables range from 28 to 32 inches wide. As for length, tables are approximately 73 to 91 inches long, and they can come with or without a headrest. The padding on top of the table frame comes in 2- to 4-inch thickness.
Materials
Next, consider the materials that make up the table. The frames of most Reiki tables are made from sturdy wood, often birch or maple, although tables can also be found with metal frames. It is your decision which type you prefer, but it is important to consider that wood has the tendency to take in the energy during a Reiki session, and the metal tends to spread it.
Considerations
While the function, size and materials making up a Reiki table are all important, there are other factors to consider before choosing a Reiki table. It is important to check the capacity of weight the table can hold, which can be up to 700 lbs. The price is another factor, and keep in mind that a lower price can result in a lower quality Reiki massage table. As of July 2010, the price of Reiki massage tables range from $100 to over $500.
Identification
If you find it difficult to tell the difference between Reiki and massage tables, that is because they are basically the same. Reiki tables are specially designed for Reiki treatments for a number of reasons. If you decide to sit while giving a Reiki treatment, Reiki tables are designed for that purpose. They have table braces and wires that will not get in your way. You also will not need the same headrest as a massage table, as massage therapists require adjustable ones and Reiki practitioners do not.
