Homeopathy is believed by naturopathic doctors and homeopaths to provide a safe, effective, nontoxic, natural treatment for people of all ages, including pregnant women, since the 1800s. Unlike many modern pharmaceuticals, homeopathy may offer pregnant women a holistic way to deal with the health issues of pregnancy without risking side effects to their unborn children. As with any health care regime, contact your caregiver of choice to ensure proper homeopathic dosages and time durations for treatment.

Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is common in the first three months of pregnancy. Many women have found effective nontoxic relief using homeopathy for morning sickness according to "Homeopathic Self-Care." The most common homeopathic remedies for morning sickness are sepia when the thought of food brings on nausea, colchicum for aversions to food smells, ipecac when abundant vomiting occurs, and for the most severe of nausea's, tabacum. It is important to pay attention to signs of dehydration due to morning sickness, as hospitalization and IV fluids may be called for in that circumstance.

Pregnancy Colds

Because the pregnant body tends to experience many changes that can effect sleep, energy and emotionality, it is common to come down with a cold from reduced resistance. According to naturopathic doctor Robert Ullman, If the cold is caught in the beginning stages, homeopathic aconite may be able to prevent the cold from getting worse, or may even be able to stop it from manifesting fully. A cold with thick yellow discharge will respond well to homeopathic pulsatilla, while a cold that is coupled with a fever will require homeopathic belladonna.

Hemorrhoids

According to midwife Ina May Gaskin, hemorrhoids or varicose veins of the rectum are a common occurrence during pregnancy and cause symptoms of pain due to inflammation and swelling. Homeopathy can be used orally or in the form of creams or suppositories to deal with this unpleasant phenomenon. The most common homeopathic treatments for hemorrhoids are: aesculus for hemorrhoids that are external, purple and painful wherein the rectum feels full of little sticks; aloe when the hemorrhoids manifest as clusters that are bunched like grapes; and collinsonia which is indicated when heart palpitations or throat constriction are coupled with the sensation of grittiness in the rectum and chronic constipation. Contact your doctor or midwife if a hemorrhoid ulcerates or begins to bleed profusely.
