The colon is the large intestine and people who eat a diet of fast food might experience chronic irregularity. Some people report having only two or three bowel movements per week. There are several natural foods that you can consume to help detox the colon so that you can re-establish healthy digestion and elimination. See your physician if you have any serious health issues before doing a colon detox program.

Psyllium Seed Husks

Carrie L’Esperance, author of "The New Seasonal Detox Diet," provides details on several different colon cleansing programs. One of them includes drinking five apple juice drinks that have psyllium seed husks swirled in. Psyllium seed husks absorb several times their weight and when consumed as part of colon cleanse, can help to create soft stool and make it easier to clear the large intestine. Some people do not respond well to psyllium seed husks, so check with your nutritionist if a detox using them is appropriate for you.

Ground Flax Seeds

Elson Haas, M.D., author of "The New Detox Diet," discusses many ways to cleanse the colon with diet. He includes the use of ground flax seed as one way to help clear the colon. Flax seeds are small brown or white seeds available in health food stores or online. Dr. Haas recommends people who are interested in cleansing the large intestine to grind up a tablespoon and sprinkle over food. He writes that doing so will help the colon gradually empty of waste. Flax seed is sometimes a good alternative for people who cannot tolerate psyllium seed. For example, some people experience abdominal cramping after consuming psyllium seed husks, as noted by studies published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Detox Diet of Vegetables, Fruits

A whole-foods, high-fiber diet will cleanse the colon, according to Dr. Haas, in his book, "The New Detox Diet." He recommends people eat whole vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains such as cooked whole oats, brown rice, millet, quinoa, groats, nuts, legumes, low-fat dairy foods and non-saturated fats such as olive, canola and flax seed oils. This detox diet will provide the soluble and insoluble fiber need to act as an “intestinal broom” to move waste through the gastrointestinal system and out of the colon, Dr. Haas states in his book. See your physician before undergoing a directed colon cleanse to determine if it is suitable for your needs.
