How to Use a a Digital Thermometer

The days of the old mercury-based thermometer are long gone. Maybe you can remember waiting for what seemed like hours for the red line to climb to its eventual stopping point. Then there was the clear glass. Not only were the numbers virtually impossible to read, but there was always the risk of the glass breaking and exposing patients to mercury. Well, not any more. Now, digital thermometers are available for babies, kids and adults alike.

Step 1

Turn the thermometer on. Most store-bought thermometers come with batteries already included and are ready for immediate use. Occasionally, a manufacturer will use a thin strip of plastic to separate the battery from the connector points, thus ensuring that the battery doesn't run down while sitting on the shelf.

Step 2

Use the thermometer. Before placing the thermometer, make sure it reads zero. Digital thermometers can take temperatures from a variety of locations on the body including the forehead, mouth, ears and rectum.

Step 3

Wait for the beep and read the temperature. Most digital thermometers beep when the temperature read-out is done. If you are not sure about the accuracy of the reading, reset the thermometer by pressing the power button and rereading the temperature.

Tips and Warnings

  • Before purchasing a digital thermometer, read the box to make sure batteries are included. If batteries are not included, purchase a set at the time of your purchase.
