Spider veins are small bursts of purple or bluish color that appear on the face and legs when blood vessels dilate in small groups near the surface of the skin. Facial spider veins can be more noticeable with hormone fluctuation, aging and overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays, according to Daily Glow. Causes of spider veins include obesity, standing for long periods of time and genetic makeup. It’s not always enough to merely hide these unsightly veins and treatment options are available.

Step 1

Exercise regularly and get plenty of fluids. According to Daily Glow this can cause spider veins in the face to fade on their own without invasive procedures or expensive doctor visits. With exercise and proper fluid intake of 8 to 10 glasses of water per day, you may also experience weight loss, which is also beneficial in eliminating spider veins.

Step 2

Opt for sclerotherapy from your dermatologist or plastic surgeon. According to the Mayo Clinic, this procedure consists of an injectable solution administered into the affected veins. This scars and damages the veins so blood flow is naturally rerouted through a healthier vein path. In some cases this procedure may need to be repeated, however the Mayo Clinic states that it is a highly effective treatment when done correctly.

Step 3

Submit to laser treatment or IPL, or intense pulsated light treatments. Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon passes a high beam laser or pulsated light over the treatment area. This in turn destroys abnormal veins, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Step 4

Opt for electrodesiccation in more severe cases of facial spider veins. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this treatment option uses electric current to close the veins visible through the skin. With the sealing of these unsightly veins, discoloration subsides.
