A smooth, consistent, repeatable golf swing begins with the proper grip. To hit a golf ball well, your club face must be square to the ball at impact. If your grip is off even slightly, it can cause your shot to end up somewhere you don't want it to be. The mechanics of your grip and the pressure you use to hold the club go a long way to determining whether your shots stay on line.
Step 1
If you are a right-handed golfer, lay the grip of the club shaft on an angle through the fatty portion of your left palm, down through the middle crease of your index finger. If you are a left-handed golfer, you will lay the grip in your right hand. Wrap your fingers around the club.
Step 2
If you are a right-handed golfer, place your left thumb down the shaft so it is in front of you and pointing toward the bottom of the club. Ensure that your thumb is centered on the top of the shaft and not off to one side.
Step 3
Place your right hand on the club so that the inside of your palm covers your left thumb. Wrap your fingers around the club.
Step 4
Interlock the pinky finger of your right hand between the index and middle fingers on your left hand. This will help give you a solid foundation and keep your wrists in line throughout the swing.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not grip the golf club too tightly. Relax your grip so that someone could pull the club away from you if they tried.
