Restylane is the brand name for a clear gel substance called hyaluronic acid that is used as a cosmetic dermatology filler. "The Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons" notes that it is a popular choice by doctors to plump up and smooth lines and creases in the face. Restylane can be used to fill out the nasolabial folds that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, the Marionette lines at the corner of the mouth to the chain, the vermillion border at the outside of the lips and other areas. Restylane is also cost effective, long lasting but not permanent, does not require allergy testing and has minimal side effects. However, in some individuals complications due to Restylane injections may occur and should be seen by a physician immediately.
Hardening
The composition of Restylane is designed to give a texture that is similar to the natural collagen produced by the body. The effects slowly diminish as it is broken down and reabsorbed. However in rare cases, an adverse reaction to the Restylane may cause it to become encapsulated and hardened by body tissues.
Research published in the December 2007 "Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons" explains that Restylane can last up to six months before it is absorbed by the body. However, when complications cause hardening of the filler, it may take longer for the body to remove it. In some cases it may have to be removed by a dermatologist.
Swelling
Dr. Francis Palmer, a cosmetic surgeon in Beverly Hills, California, advises that some slight swelling around the area of injection is common in patients that receive Restylane treatments. This swelling usually subsides completely in a few hours to one to two days. However, complications may arise if abnormal or long term swelling occurs at the sight of injection or general swelling. This may be caused by an allergic or adverse reaction or due to an existing illness of medication that the patient is taking. Dr. Palmer advises that patients must inform their physicians of any illness or medication prior to injections. Prescription medications and supplements that can thin the blood and increase swelling, bruising and bleeding at the area of injection, include aspirin, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort and vitamin E.
Redness
Reddening is also a common and normal side effect of Restylane injections. Redness usually occurs at and around the site of injection due to the needle puncturing the skin to place the filler. However, in rare cases redness may be severe and due to inflammation by an adverse reaction or an infection. An infection occurs if the injection site is not properly cleaned before and after the procedure. As with any injection or cut to the skin, proper cleaning is essential for healthy healing. In severe cases an antibiotic may be needed to clear up the infection. Dr. Palmer recommends ice therapy and rest for normal redness after Restylane injections.
