During a round of golf, situations sometimes come up that dictate you hit a low shot. There could be a tree branch in your way, or a stiff breeze could be blowing, and taking a high shot will only get you into trouble. Hitting a low shot requires some modifications in your approach and swing technique, but it is possible and not too difficult for a golfer with some experience.
Step 1
Position the golf ball about 2 inches back from the middle of your stance. This will help take the loft away from the face of your club.
Step 2
Choke down on the club and take an extra club to make up the difference. For example, if the shot calls for a 7 iron, use a 6 iron instead because choking down on the shaft will cause you to lose distance. Move your hands slightly ahead of the ball at address.
Step 3
Bring your club back about three-quarters as far as you do in your normal backswing. A shorter backswing will give you more control over the club and the shot.
Step 4
Squeeze the club a little tighter with your left hand as you make contact to prevent your right wrist from rotating over the left. Squeeze with your right hand if you are a left-handed shot. Keep your follow through lower than shoulder height.
Tips and Warnings
- Visualize your shot beforehand to help get your nervous system ready for what you want to do.
