When you have scars on your face, you may want to diminish their appearance by tanning the area. Sunless tanning products are the safer alternative to exposing your skin to sunlight to achieve a bronzed look. The Scientific American website states that sunless tanners contain a chemical called dihydroxyacetone or DHA. The chemical reacts with the proteins found in the skin and creates the tanned color. You may purchase sunless tanning gels made specifically for the face over the counter at any pharmacy or beauty supply store.
Step 1
Choose a shade close to your natural skin tone. When you are trying to hide a scar, you don’t want to pick a very dark color for the sunless tanner. Dark colors may make the scar more visible on the face.
Step 2
Cleanse your face. For best results, use an exfoliating wash. Dry your skin completely before applying the sunless tanner.
Step 3
Wash your hands. Clean your hands before and after you apply the sunless tanning gel to the face.
Step 4
Apply a very thin layer of sunless tanner to the skin. If you overuse the product you may give the scar a darkened appearance. Blend well to make sure that all of the solution is absorbed into the skin. Allow the skin on your face to dry completely before you put on any other skin care products. If the shade you choose does not tan your skin dark enough for your liking, you may put on two or more coats of the solution once each layer dries completely.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep in mind that sunless tanning gels do not offer any type of SPF protection against the sun’s harmful rays. Consider the age of the scar. According to the Sunless.com website, newer scars may not absorb the sunless tanning solution. Sunless tanning products work best on older scars.
