Hemorrhoids occur when veins in the rectum become inflamed and swollen. The hemorrhoid is the small- to medium-sized bulge of tissue that forms outside the anus as a result of this inflammation. Symptoms include pain, itching and sometimes bleeding. Individuals can treat hemorrhoids at home in various ways, such as by eating a more high-fiber diet and applying witch hazel to the inflammation.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is an astringent solution that is found in many over-the-counter hemorrhoid-relief products. Applying this astringent directly to the hemorrhoid with a cotton ball or soft cloth can help soothe itching and shrink the tissues of the hemorrhoid, suggests MayoClinic.com.

Soak

Soaking in a shallow, warm bath several times a day can keep the anus clean as well as reduce irritation or inflammation. Common additives to the bath include baking soda, Epsom salts or colloidal oatmeal. These products can be added in one- or two-cup amounts to the bath water before soaking. Following the bath, individuals should dry the anus gently, but thoroughly. MayoClinic.com suggests using a hair dryer on the area to dry the skin completely.

Cold Packs

An ice pack made with ice and cloth or a cold wash cloth applied to the hemorrhoid can decrease swelling. Individuals should apply the cold pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time several times per day.

Hygiene

When a hemorrhoid exists, it is important for sufferers to keep the anus area clean despite potential discomfort. Using moist toilet paper, wet personal care wipes or a warm wash cloth are effective ways to gently cleanse the area, states the Kids Health website.
