Medicines for Urinary Infections

Infections can occur anywhere along the urinary tract, the Mayo Clinic says. The infections that occur have different names depending upon where they exist, such as a bladder infection, kidney infection, urethra infection and ureter infection. Such infections typically induce symptoms such as difficulty urinating, or pain or burning while urinating. Doctors typically prescribe antibiotics to treat urinary infections. The time frame required for the course of antibiotic treatment depends on the history of the person and number of occurrences of infection.

Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim

This antibiotic combination medication therapeutically destroys the bacteria causing the urinary infection. Its combination effect contains a sulfonamide that helps to further destroy bacteria-causing infections. Alerting the physician to any heart problems and prescribed medication such as anticoagulants to avoid adverse affects remains necessary regarding its therapeutic use. Non-serious side effects can include gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and appetite loss, Drugs.com says.

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin, classified as an antibiotic, belongs to the group of cillins such as penicillin. It works by killing the harmful bacteria causing infection in the human body such as bladder infections, Drugs.com reports. This antibiotic works on other diseases such as ear infections, pneumonia and E. coli-bacterial type infections n the body. Non-serious side effects of amoxicillin also include gastrointestinal difficulties such as diarrhea, vomiting and nausea, Drugs.com says. Severe side effects, such as hives and shortness of breath, require immediate medical attention. Amoxicillin may be taken up to four times a day or as prescribed by a doctor. It comes in capsule and liquid form.

Levofloxacin

This medication, used to treat certain bacteria in urinary tract infections, belongs to an antibiotic type called quinolone. It destroys certain harmful bacteria in the body that cause the infections. The person taking this medication should drink plenty of fluids. Any type of negative cardiac history including arrhythmias, and any medication taken for cardiac treatment can cause problems with levofloxaxin and the doctor needs to know about it before prescribing this antibiotic. Levofoxacin comes in tablet form usually taken once per day or as prescribed by a physician. Non-serious side effects include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting as well as a headache.
