There are a variety of reasons for a child to experience dry scalp but its treatment tends to be fairly simple. Using a few simple grocery store ingredients along with some holistic oils and homeopathic treatments, your child's days of itchy dry skin are numbered. Take the time to make this care regime a positive and nurturing experience your child will enjoy.

Addressing Dry Scalp

Step 1

Use a dandruff brush to gently massage your child's scalp to remove the buildup of dry flaking skin.

Step 2

Create a cleansing solution made from 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar and 2/3 cup warm water. Leave the mixture on your child's head for 10 minutes being careful to avoid dripping into his eyes.

Step 3

Rinse your child's head well with warm water.

Step 4

Wash your child's hair with a naturally based shampoo that boasts a low p.h.; a gentle shampoo that boasts tea tree or lavender essential oil is ideal. Be sure to use the pads of your fingers to gently massage into the skin of the scalp.

Step 5

Use a deeply moisturizing conditioner and allow it to penetrate your child's scalp for 10 minutes. Rinse well with warm water.

Completing the Process

Step 1

After towel drying your child's hair, massage several drops of olive oil into your child's scalp.

Step 2

When your child's hair has air dried, apply a few drops of rosemary and lavender essential oil to a natural bristle brush and gently brush your child's hair thoroughly.

Step 3

Use homeopathic Calendula 30x three times a day until you notice improvement in your child's skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Supplementing your child's diet with omega-3 fatty acids may also be helpful in reducing dry scalp conditions. If your child's dry scalp does not respond to this home treatment, contact your doctor of choice. Naturopathic doctors may be able to offer more gentle and symptom specific care regimens while conventional doctors may choose to address your child's dry scalp with pharmaceutical measures.
  • If your child's scalp begins to look infected or hair begins to fall out, don't hesitate to contact your health care provider so that they can rule out any serious emotional or physical conditions.
