Pingpong, also known as table tennis, is a sport played with two to four players over a net on a table with wooden paddles and a plastic ball. Pingpong is very fast-paced and the object is to hit the ball back and forth over the net to outscore your opponent. Pingpong is a relatively straightforward game to play.

Step 1

Serve the ball to begin the game. To serve, the ball must be in the open palm of your free hand, then tossed at least 16 cm into the air before you hit it. It also must hit the table on your side before clearing the net.

Step 2

Return the serve. You must let the ball bounce once on your side of the net before you are permitted to return. For singles play, you can land the ball on any part of the table provided it is on the other side of the net.

Step 3

Continue the rally. Each player hits the ball back and forth over the net until someone is unable to return the ball cleanly. Points are awarded after each ball is served into play, meaning you don't have to be serving to win a point.

Step 4

Tally the scores. The first player to 11 points is the winner of the game, provided the margin of victory is at least two points. Determine how many game victories wins your match, such as a best-three-out-of-five format.
