When Dr. Kenneth Cooper coined the term “aerobics,” in the late 1960s, it was first applied to exercise, such as jogging or running, that raised the heart rate and promoted oxygen intake, according to the Cooper Aerobics Center. Since then, the list of aerobic exercises has grown, and modern aerobics exercise is mostly just referred to as "aerobics," or dance exercise.

Aerobic Dance

Aerobics dance includes many types of dance exercise routines, from step aerobics to true dance, 24 Hour Fitness notes. Aerobics workouts are sometimes performed in a group at a gym, school, or other recreation spot, but you can also practice them at home. How many calories you might burn per hour during any aerobics workout, the Mayo Clinic notes in a chart outlining the calorie burn for various types of exercises, depends on how vigorously you perform them.

During low-impact aerobics, you’ll burn approximately 365 calories per hour if you weigh 160 pounds, 455 calories per hour if you weigh 200 pounds, and 545 calories if you weigh 240 pounds, according to the Mayo Clinic scale.

For high-impact aerobics, those respective weights would burn about 511, 637, and 763 calories per hour.

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics exercise burns slightly less calories per hour, but it is very low-impact and provides a gentle workout, especially for participants who have joint problems and related conditions, 24 Hour Fitness reports. Water aerobics routines typically burn 292 calories per hour for a person who weighs 160 pounds, 364 calories per hour for someone at 200 pounds, and 436 calories per hour for a person at 240 pounds, the Mayo Clinic says.

Zumba

The Zumba Fitness website raves about the “calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements” performed during its classes, which typically last one hour. Based on high-energy Latin moves, you dance your calories off to Latin, world and, pop music. A Zumba group exercise class will burn 500 calories or more per hour, the website adds.

Jazzercize

Jazzercise is another way to dance your calories off in 60 minutes. By combining cardio dance exercise with strengthening and stretching moves, you get an efficient calorie-burning workout, the Jazzercise website reports. The combination of jazz dance, hip-hop, kickboxing, yoga, and Pilates moves with a little resistance training can burn more than 500 calories per hour.

Ballroom Dancing

Don't let the formal dress fool you — ballroom dancing can burn off the calories, too. Those who weigh 160 pounds, 200 pounds, and 240 pounds, respectively, will burn roughly 219, 273, and 327 calories per hour with ballroom dancing, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ballroom dancing typically includes traditional dancing, from salsa to the waltz.
