There is a dizzying array of skin care products available, many promising miraculous benefits. Some claims, to be sure, are heavy on the hype, but modern cosmetics chemistry has come a long way. Moisturizers and facial cleansers still contain humectants to hold in moisture and surfactants to clean the skin, but the best of them contain even more beneficial ingredients that can help stave off the wrinkles, dryness and brown spots that used to be an inevitable part of the aging process.

Philosophy's Divine Illumination Moisturizer

Philosophy's Divine Illumination moisturizer is a "Fitness" magazine Beauty Award winner. Its ingredients include niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3. According to skin care expert Paula Begoun, niacinamide can prevent skin from losing moisture and also lighten dark spots. Philosophy's Divine Illumination contains a number of plant-based ingredients such as coffee seed extract, lavender, rosewood and barley extract. Founded by an entrepreneur whose first venture was a medically based skin care company that sold only to physicians, Philosophy was designed to bridge the gap between medical and retail skin care.

Aveeno Positively Ageless Lifting & Firming Daily Moisturizer

Aveeno Positively Ageless Lifting & Firming Daily Moisturizer won a beauty award from "Natural Health" magazine in the face care category. Aveeno, long known for its use of oatmeal as a soothing skin care ingredient, has expanded into a full line of botanically based products. Positively Ageless Lifting & Firming Daily Moisturizer features shiitake mushrooms. Shiitake mushrooms are a natural antioxidant, meaning that they can combat the skin-damaging free radicals generated by the ultraviolet rays of the sun, air pollution, alcohol consumption and cigarette smoke. This product deserves kudos for its sun protection factor, or SPF, of 30. Good skin protection is an important part of skin care, since sun exposure can cause not only wrinkles and spots but can lead to cancer.

Biore Clean Things Up Nourishing Gel Cleanser

Biore Clean Things Up Nourishing Gel Cleanser is another award winner chosen by "Fitness" magazine. This moisturizer contains vitamin E, a fat-soluble ingredient that's widely used to hydrate and soften the skin and as a powerful, wrinkle-fighting antioxidant. It also contains Camellia sinensis, known commonly as green tea. Green tea has astringent, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, according to Begoun.

Lancôme Galatée Confort Comforting Milky Cream Cleanser

Lancôme Galatée Confort Comforting Milky Cream Cleanser was an "Allure" magazine Best of Beauty award winner. Among its ingredients are corn oil, wheat germ oil, sweet almond protein, honey and carageenan, a seaweed-based substance that claims to help the skin retain moisture. According to "Allure" magazine, the cleanser is an excellent makeup remover and will leave your skin plump and pliant.
