A fungal infection is the most common type of toenail disorder, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center or UMMC. Once treated, a new nail grows in place of the affected nail. Toenail infections may start out as a small white or yellowish spot and eventually cause nail thickening, discoloration and pain. Toenail fungus infection can be a challenge to treat and prone to recurrence. Certain medications along with various home remedies may help clear toenail infections.

Herbal Supplements

Taking 250 to 500mg of green tea standardized extract or drinking green tea may help treat toenail infections due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties, according to the UMMC. Cat's claw also may also help kill bacteria and fungus. Take about 20mg three times daily as suggested.

Tea Tree Oil

Applying full strength tea tree oil to the affected toenail with a cotton swab 3 or 4 times per day may help fight off the infection. Tea tree oil is a strong natural antiseptic.

Vinegar

Soaking an infected toe nail in one part vinegar and two parts water may prevent the growth of bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic. Keep your infected toe immersed in water for at least 15 minutes. Vinegars acidity can decrease itching and restore the PH balance which is needed to fight the microorganism responsible for toenail fungus. Rinse your feet thoroughly and pat dry when finished. If daily dipping is too irritating for your toe, try soaking it every other day or add a little more water to the vinegar.

Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub is purported to help treat nail fungus, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are no clear guidelines as to how often Vicks VapoRub should be applied to infected toenails. Talk to your doctor before attempting this home remedy.

Dietary Considerations

Eating certain foods may relieve the symptoms of toenail fungal infections. Foods rich in calcium including almonds, spinach and kale as well blueberries, cherries, and tomatoes that are packed with antioxidants are all recommended by the UMMC.

It may also help to limit your intake of foods contain trans fatty acids like donuts, cakes, cookies, french fries and margarine. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water daily may also ease symptoms of a toenail infection.
