When you have strong and shiny hair, your mane looks and feels great. Shiny hair is desirable because it is a sign that the hair is in good health, according to the TeensHealth website from the Nemours Foundation. It shows that the protective cuticle layer of the hair is in good shape and not damaged. When you have strong hair, you are preventing hair loss and breakage. Taking care of your hair ensures that it looks its best.

Step 1

Shampoo the hair every other day. When you shampoo more often, you are stripping the hair of its protective oils. Each time you shower, use a conditioner to strengthen hair and give it a shiny appearance. The conditioner that you choose should be rich in proteins and moisturizers, according to "Fitness" magazine.

Step 2

Spritz your hair with a UV protecting agent. This type of spray coats the hair with a thin gel to keep the sun’s rays from damaging the hair. Apply the spray before going outdoors.

Step 3

Wear hats and scarves to protect the hair from environmental damage caused by the sun, wind and pollution.

Step 4

Brush your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Brushing and combing the hair too often can damage the hair. Avoid restrictive styles, such as ponytails, braids and buns, because they can weaken and break the hair.

Step 5

Avoid using blow dryers, curling irons, hot rollers, straightening irons and crimpers regularly. Heated styling tools can cause the hair to become brittle and damaged. When possible, allow the hair to air dry.

Things You'll Need

  • Moisturizing conditioner
  • UV protecting spray
  • Wide toothed comb
