The best way to lose weight is not to stop eating or follow the latest fad diet. According to The Diet Channel, you should focus on losing weight slowly, by making small changes over time. Switching to healthier foods that keep you full but also contribute to your weight loss is the key to success.

Fruits and Vegetables

All fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, but some are lower in sugar and calories, so you should focus on them. According to Peer Trainer, green vegetables are the best ones for weight loss as they tend to be lower in calories. You can make your own salads using things like collard greens, romaine lettuce, broccoli, Swiss chard, cabbage and spinach. Instead of using oil or creamy dressings to flavor the salads, choose lemon juice or use herbs and pepper or other dry condiments. If you want to have some juice, make vegetable, rather than fruit juice, for a drink that has fewer calories and less sugar.

High-Fiber Cereals and Grains

Fiber provides bulk, which fills you up so you feel less hungry, according to Now Loss. Because high-fiber foods tend to be low in calories, you will feel satisfied even though your calorie intake is a lot lower than a standard meal would provide. Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, as are whole grains such as wheat, oatmeal and bran. When choosing cereals and grains, choose those that are sugar-free. An example of a high-fiber, low-calorie lunch could be a whole-wheat tortilla filled with shredded veggies and some grilled meat.

Lean Proteins

Chicken, fish and turkey are the leanest meats available, according to Now Loss. When cooking or choosing proteins, make sure they’re baked or grilled, rather than fried, so you keep your calories on the lower side. Beans are both high in protein and fiber, so they’re helpful on both aspects. Dairy products can be part of a weight-loss program if you stick to low-fat choices. Read labels and compare brands so you can choose the products with the lowest sugar and calorie content.
