When you have dark circles and puffiness around the eyes, it can make you look older and worn out. Both conditions do not typically indicate a serious medical issue, however, if you are unable to get rid of them at home, you can speak to a doctor to rule out any underlying problem, such as dermatitis and allergies.
Sleeping Changes
When you do not get enough sleep at night, you can wake up with bags under your eyes. Aim for at least seven to eight hours of rest each night to avoid this problem. Since fluid can pool around the eyes during sleep, use an extra pillow at night. Sleeping with the head of your mattress elevated also helps get rid of puffiness around the eyes.
Cold Compresses
Exposing the eye area to cold reduces the swelling related to the under eye bags and also constricts blood vessels causing the dark circles. “The Doctors Book of Home Remedies II” featured on the Mother Nature website, suggests leaving a washcloth moistened in cold water on the eyes for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. You may need to remoisten the washcloth during this time to keep it cold. You can repeat usage throughout the day. As an alternative, you can also try placing cold cucumber slices or teabags wet with cool water on the eyes.
Limit Exposure to Common Allergens
Allergies can cause both puffiness around the eyes and dark circles to occur. If you develop these reactions after exposure to certain allergens, avoid these items. Common allergens include hair dyes, soaps, cosmetics, pet dander, dust and pollen. If you are unable to stop your allergy symptoms, speak to your doctor about using an over-the-counter or prescription strength antihistamine.
