Home Remedies for Face Redness

Facial redness could be a result of flushing, which is blushing that lasts for prolonged periods of time, or rosacea, a chronic skin condition that produces small red bumps on the face. Although medical treatments are available, such as steroids and topical acne solutions, you can try home remedies to clear up facial redness. In the meantime, conceal the redness with yellow- or green-tinted makeup products.

Keep Out of Sun and Wind

Sun exposure worsens rosacea and flushing symptoms. Avoid the sun whenever possible, and while outdoors, use clothing pieces, such as hats and sunglasses to protect the skin on the face. During the winter, whipping wind can irritate the skin and lead to facial redness. Wear scarves to protect the area.

Apply Petroleum Jelly

Since blood vessels dilate in cold weather and may contribute to flushing, “The Doctors Book of Home Remedies II,” reprinted on the Mother Nature website, suggests protecting the face with petroleum jelly. Before going outdoors, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the skin.

Avoid Alcohol and Trigger Foods

If you suffer from rosacea or flushing, it is advised by the MayoClinic to avoid alcohol. Alcohol causes the blood vessels to dilate, which can lead to reddening of the skin. Certain foods may also trigger a flushing response in people. Some examples include red wine, spicy food and caffeinated beverages. Eliminate these food items from your diet one at a time to see if the withdrawal of the offending substance resolves your facial redness naturally.

Stay Cool

Turn down the thermostat in your home if you have a tendency to suffer from facial redness. Dress in light and breathable clothing, such as cotton pieces.

Lower Body Temperature

Exposing the body to cold can temporarily relieve facial redness. Some ways to cool down include sucking on ice chips for several minutes or applying a cool compress to the face.
