The kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra comprise the urinary system, the area where a urinary tract infection--also known as bladder infection--first begins. While the infection can begin in any area of the urinary system, it typically starts in the lower tract which contains the bladder and urethra, according to MayoClinic.com. Because of differences in anatomy, women are more prone to urinary tract infections than men. And while antibiotics can treat these infections, some people choose not to take them due to their potential side effects. However, any alternative approaches should not be used in place of a doctor's orders.

Step 1

Drink more cranberry juice. Kimberly A. Workowski, M.D., assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University in Atlanta explains on MotherNature.com that cranberry juice may prevent bacteria from sticking to the cells lining the urinary tract. MayoClinic.com adds that drinking the juice may have the greatest effect on women who experience frequent infections, although this is not proven and the amount needed is not known.

Step 2

Fill up on water. Drinking water increases the flow of urine, which helps flush the bacteria out the system responsible for the infection. Kristene E. Whitmore, M.D., chief of urology and director of the Incontinence Center at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia states in an article on MotherNature.com that remaining hydrated is the best treatment for a urinary tract infection, and suggests drinking one glass of water every hour for eight hours. Sufferers should carry a bottle of water with them no matter where they go as a reminder to drink the proper amount throughout the day.

Step 3

Drink a mix of baking soda and water. MotherNature.com quotes Whitmore as saying that as soon as symptoms of a urinary tract infection begin--such as burning along with frequent urination--mix 1/2 tsp. of baking soda with an 8-oz. glass of water and drink. This increases the pH of the urine, reducing its acidity and making it less irritating.

Step 4

Eliminate beverages that irritate the bladder. Certain beverage have a tendency to irritate the bladder while increasing the need to urinate. These include alcohol, drinks containing caffeine such as tea, coffee and some soft drinks, and citrus drinks.

Step 5

Zest up drinks with lemon juice. the website A to Z of Health and Beauty explains that lemons and their juice may have many benefits, one of which may be the ability to help clear up a urinary tract infection. They are a diuretic and help flush the toxins and bad bacteria from the body.
