Resting metabolic rate, which is useful to know for weight loss, means how fast your body burns calories when it is at rest. Your weight, muscle mass, age, gender and other factors affect the rate. Hi-tech equipment and an exercise physiologist, often available in a university's exercise science department, can determine your react rate for a fee. However, you can calculate your resting metabolic rate by using a formula.
Step 1
Weigh yourself. The most accurate measurement will be in the morning.
Step 2
Divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 to determine your weight in kilograms.
Step 3
Refer to the resting metabolic rate gender and age chart. Find your age range for the appropriate gender. For example, a male between the ages of 30 and 60 will use the equation (11.6 x weight) + 879. A female between 30 and 60 will use the equation (8.7 x weight) + 829.
Step 4
Plug in your weight to the calculation. For example, if you are a 35-year-old female who weights 63.64 kg (140 lb. divided by 2.2), calculate (8.7 x 63.64) + 829 = 1,382.63. Your estimated resting metabolic rate 1,382 calories per hour.
