A chip shot in golf is a shot used when you are within a few yards from the green. Chip shots are used if you want the ball to stop close to the pin, and if you want the ball to hit the green and release. It is possible to use a number of different clubs for a chip shot, not just a sand wedge or pitching wedge. Depending on how the golf ball sits in the grass, some golfers will even use their driver to chip.

Step 1

Hold your club of choice with your normal grip. Choke down on it as much as you like to be closer to the ball and increase the "feel" of your chip shot.

Step 2

Place your feet in a narrow stance, less than shoulder-width apart. You don't want any weight shift to take place so you can maintain control during shot.

Step 3

Line up so the ball is toward the back of your stance. Open your feet and shoulders slightly to help you get a better look at the hole.

Step 4

Shift your weight to your front foot and swing the club like a pendulum. Take a low follow-through so the ball doesn't go too high. The end result will be like a "mini swing" at the golf ball.

Tips and Warnings

  • Let your wrists flex and bend naturally through the chip shot. Don't look up too soon when taking a chip shot.
