Vegas vacations might bring images of sitting in front of a slot machine or at a gambling table all day. These are not exactly considered physically challenging activities and kids aren't allowed on the casino gambling floor The truth is that casinos are just part of the attractions of Las Vegas. There are many activities for families with children in Vegas that will help you burn off those calories you just inhaled at the hotel's buffet. They range from sports to sightseeing.
Swimming
Pools are a popular destination for children and adults alike in Las Vegas. Some hotels such as MGM Grand, Monte Carlo and Mandalay Bay have lazy rivers you can float upon on a raft. If you want to challenge the waves, while it's not the ocean, Mandalay Bay offers that opportunity as well with a wave pool. While hotel pools are not open to the public, there are more than 10 public pools operated throughout Las Vegas. Some pools are open seasonally during summer months, and others, especially the indoor ones, are open throughout the year.
Activity Parks
Help your children stay active by participating in sporting activities at entertainment parks around Las Vegas. These parks allow children and adults to test their eye-hand coordination by taking a swing in the batting cage. Families can have a friendly competition while playing miniature golf. Finish off the day at the park with a race on go-karts on the tracks at the entertainment parks.
Visit The Lake
Las Vegas may be landlocked without an ocean in sight, Lake Mead offers plenty of water activities for families with children. Hire one of the boats at Lake Mead to take your family for a scenic tour of the lake. While on the lake you can spend the day fishing or water skiing. Paths around the lake offer an opportunity to take a nature walk with your children and discover the agriculture and animals native to the Las Vegas area. After building up an appetite, enjoy a picnic lunch with sandwiches picked up from a local supermarket or restaurant, helping you to avoid the buffet for yet another meal.
Create Your Own Souvenir Collection
Choose an item that your children want to collect from the casinos in Las Vegas and spend a day visiting gift shops collecting them. Walking the Las Vegas Strip can take an entire afternoon. Choose an item such as pens or magnets for each casino along the Strip. Gift shops even sell poker chips with each casino's emblem labeled on the chips. Any of these can be combined to create your own souvenir. Collecting them yourselves provides entertainment and exercise, instead of just buying a complete collection from a gift shop on the street.
Play The Games
Exercise doesn't just have to be hiking around town--you can have fun competing while getting your exercise. This can be done at several gaming locations for children throughout Las Vegas. Gameworks offers athletic challenges such as shooting baskets with a basketball, kicking a soccer ball and hitting a baseball. At Circus Circus there are a variety of "Midway Style games" in which you compete to knock targets down, race with water guns to pop a balloon and move through obstacle courses. All of these will keep you active and give your kids a chance to come home with prizes.
