In an abstract posted on PubMed website, May 15, 2009, entitled “Infraorbital, dark circles, definition, causes and treatment options,” authored by Drs. M.R. Roh and K.Y. Chung, they define infraorbital dark circles as a cosmetic concern and not a medical problem. Based on these authors’ medical experiences and reviews in medical literature, they concluded that multiple factors cause dark circles under the eyes. These may include excessive pigmentation, or loose, thin skin under the eyelids that cause shadowing. Herbal remedies may help treat these dark circles.
Tea Bag Treatment
Tea bags are a common treatment for dark circles under the eyes. Tea contains tannin that constricts blood vessels and may help to remove the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, according to James Heffley, Ph.D. Tannins also break down into flavonoids, powerful antioxidants that protect cells from the ravages of free radicals. Apply a cool, moist tea bag to each eye for 15 to 20 minutes once a day as needed.
Parsley
Parsley is a garden herb used as a culinary garnish. Parsley contains an abundant supply of chlorophyll. The chlorophyll in parsley may help lessen dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. Prepare chopped parsley leaves, add the leaves to water in an ice cube tray and freeze it. Wrap the parsley ice cubes in a small, soft towel and apply it under the eyes. This will soothe the eyes, relieve puffiness and help lessen the dark circles.
Chilled Cucumber Slices
Cucumber is made up of 90 percent water. Its water content makes it an excellent cooling and soothing product. According to Disabledworld.com, cucumber may help reduce swelling and puffiness and reduce dark circles around the eyes. Apply a chilled, thin cucumber slice to each eye, for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce dark circles and refresh and soothe the eyes.
Rose Water
Rose water, or the extract of rose petal, is soothing to the skin under the eyes. Rose water may remove redness, rejuvenate the skin and reduce dark circles under the eyes. Soak cotton balls in chilled rose water and apply a cotton ball to each eye for 10 to 15 minutes as needed. This refreshes the eyes and helps lessen dark circles under the eyes, according to PioneerThinking website.
