Albuterol is a medication commonly used for short-term relief of symptoms associated with lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It helps in preventing and treating symptoms such as wheezing, difficulty breathing and chest tightness. According to Medline Plus, albuterol is a bronchodilator that relaxes and opens the air passages to the lungs to make breathing easier. It can come in the form of a tablet or syrup to be taken orally. It can also be given with a metered dose inhaler, especially for children. According to Medline Plus, there may be side effects due to albuterol and these include allergic reactions, pain or swelling, and breathing or other side effects.

Allergic Reactions and Breathing

According to Medline Plus, there may be allergic reactions due to the intake of Albuterol. A person may develop rashes, hives or itching, coughing, soreness or dryness in the throat. The person may also experience swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. According to Medline Plus, a person on Albuterol may experience an increase in breathing difficulty. New breathing difficulties may arise or they may worsen. Wheezing, unusual hoarseness, difficulty in breathing, difficulty swallowing or tightness in the chest may also occur.

Pain and Swelling

According to Medline Plus, Albuterol may cause pain and swelling. An person may complain of pain in the chest or pain in the ear. Severe headache can also be one of the side-effects of Albuterol. Pain, tightness and pressure in the jaw, neck, or chest may also be experienced. There may also be severe stomach pain and swelling in the arms or legs. The skin may also swell, redden, blister or peel.

Breathing or Other Side Effects

A person may also experience nervousness, dizziness and uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body. Muscle cramps and excessive motion or activity are also side effects of Albuterol. There may be an increase or decrease in a person's appetite. Other side effects include difficulties in falling or staying asleep, nosebleeds, pale skin, and fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat. Sudden changes in mood may also be a side effect.
