Chasing and tagging games rank highly among favorite classic games for many kids. These games also give kids exercise that helps them stay healthy. Tag games can work in any setting with lots of kids: in gym class, on the playground, or at a child's party.
Blob Tag
Blob tag starts with one person as the tagger but eventually adds all of the players, according to MrGym.com. When someone is tagged, she joins hands to create the beginning of the blob. Each time a new player is tagged, she joins hands with the other taggers. You eventually end up with a large blob of people who are "it." If the blob gets unmanageable, break the group into two separate blobs. The game is over once the last player is tagged and joins the blob.
Caged Lion
The Caged Lion version of tag provides variety from usual tag games. The person who is "it" is the lion. He stands inside a square on his hands and knees. The website Fun-Attic recommends a square with 10-foot sides. The lion must stay within the square, which represents his cage. The remaining players run through the cage, stand in it and otherwise tempt the lion. If a player is tagged by the lion within the cage, she becomes the new lion.
Corner Tag
This tag game starts with squares in each of the four corners of the playing area. The person who is "it" stands in the middle of the playing area. The remaining players stand in the four squares, with the players divided evenly among the squares. The players are safe within the squares. The game is played by two players in two different squares switching places without getting tagged by the person who is "it." Multiple pairs may switch spots at the same time to make it more challenging for the tagger to catch someone.
Everyone's It
Instead of naming one person as the tagger, all of the players are "it" in this variation of tag described by MrGym.com. With so many taggers, the game will likely move quickly. Players try to tag other players while they avoid getting tagged by other players. When two players tag one another simultaneously, both players are out. If you want the game to continue indefinitely, have the students who get tagged move to the side and perform a specific physical activity. You might have them run a lap, do sit-ups or walk along a balance beam. Once the task is completed, the player returns to the game.
