Fruits contain glycolic acid, also known as alphahydroxy acid, which is frequently used in facial peels and other treatments. Lactic acid and citric acid are also used in facial peels. The Skin Care Resource Center website says facial peels made with fruit-based acids are good for exfoliating, restoring elasticity, reducing pore size, stimulating collagen production and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While citrus fruits typically have the highest acidity, the Skin Care Resource Center highlights some additional fruits and vegetables you may want to consider for a face peel.
Citrus Fruits
The acids in the juice of citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, pineapple and oranges help to remove dead skin cells. This process of exfoliation stimulates new cell growth. Citrus fruits are often mixed with gelatin or honey to soften the skin.
Tomato
Tomato pulp can help to restore natural pH levels. It is also useful in the treatment of acne. A combination of tomato pulp, gelatin and orange juice makes for a well rounded peel.
Cucumber
Cucumbers diminish hyperpigmentation while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Egg white complements the cucumber, as it firms and tightens the skin.
Avocado
Avocado is addresses hyperpigmentation. When mashed and applied to the skin it also moisturizes and helps to diminish the appearance of scars. Egg white added to the avocado tightens the skin.
Warnings
Alphahydroxy acid-based peels may cause stinging, redness, irritation, dryness and even crusting and flaking. Protect your skin from the sun after an AHA peel. In addition, do not use any fruits or complementary ingredients to which you are allergic.
