Nestled on San Francisco Bay, the large city known for its clam chowder and bustling night life offers a number of activities on one of the biggest holidays of the year. Although New Year's Eve is known as one of the biggest drinking holidays of the year, there are a number of healthy activities to enjoy across the city.
Events
Across the city there are a number of parties that boast the area's top DJs or largest crowds. Every year one of the biggest parties in San Francisco is held at The Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion where you can have a 180-degree view of the bay. Union Square is also the site of a large block party every year. If you'd rather dance the night away, there are a number of dance parties at such locations as Front Row Party at Sens or Decadence at The Regency.
First Night
For $10 (as of 2010) you can enjoy the alcohol-free, family-oriented "First Night" celebration across San Francisco on New Year's Eve. This ticket gets you into 20 different locations throughout the town where you can enjoy live stage and music performances as well as ethnic dance sessions. You can use the same ticket at each location.
Restaurants
San Francisco is one of the biggest foodie cities in the United States. Across the city there are a variety of organic, local-produced food options to enjoy on New Year's Eve. For example, the Millennium Restaurants has a number of organic New Year's Eve-only menu options.
Cruises
One safe way to enjoy New Year's Eve is by taking a dinner cruise on the bay under the Golden Gate Bridge. Watch fireworks from one of the many boats such as Hornblower's Cruises. Most cruises include a free toast at midnight.
Fireworks
New Year's Eve fireworks are a tradition over the bay and a safe way to celebrate with your family. Find a spot along the Wharf and ring in the New Year with one of the largest firework shows of the year. After the fireworks enjoy a safe stroll along Fisherman's Wharf or climb to the top of Lombardi street for a view of the bustling city.
