Myrtle Beach is a popular summertime destination for families, couples and college students, but there are still plenty of things to do in winter. A December vacation to Myrtle Beach offers fewer crowds and lower prices, and mild winter temperatures mean that Myrtle Beach is perfectly comfortable during the winter months.

Sports and Recreation

High temperatures in spring and summer can make outdoor activities that don't include the beach uncomfortable. With a December average high temperature of 60 degrees and an average low of 50 degrees, December offers ideal weather for beach walks, nature hikes, bike rides and golfing, In fact, many of the dozens of area golf courses offer "winter golf savings" packages. Although the ocean is a bit too cold for swimming in December, the weather is comfortable for boating, sailing, kayaking and canoeing.

Spas

Just about all spas in the Myrtle Beach area are open year-round. There are dozens of day and multiday spa packages in the area, where residents and visitors alike can take a day or two to focus on their mental and physical well-being by indulging themselves in relaxing massages, aromatherapy, getting a facial or heading to the sauna or Turkish baths to get rid of body toxins. Many spas offer special December discounts or multiday packages.

Dining

Even though Myrtle Beach tends to fill up in the spring and summer months, a majority of restaurants are open year-round and residents and visitors to Myrtle Beach in December can enjoy a variety of healthy options at area Thai, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, vegetarian and organic restaurants. In addition, the Myrtle Beach Farmers' Market is open year-round. In December, individuals can visit the farmers' market on Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Attractions

Although some Myrtle Beach attractions close in December, a number of attractions such as the Ripley's Aquarium, Waccatee Zoo, Brookgreen Gardens, Cherry Grove Pier, the Country Farm Museum and a number of galleries and small museums remain open year round. Those who want to remain active in December can head to Myrtle Beach State Park or Huntington Beach State Park for biking, walking or jogging.

Indoor Activities

Although December temperatures are usually mild and comfortable, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep residents and visitors busy on those rare chilly days. Several area recreation centers offer a pool, gym, indoor jogging track, fitness rooms and tennis courts, and all offer day passes for those who are just passing through the area. In addition, visitors can head to the bowling alley or the roller hockey rink for a bit of physical activity.
