Split ends can be a telltale sign of hair damage, affecting each individual hair shaft. According to CareFair.com, split ends are hairs that literally split to form a "Y" at the endings. Constant over-processing and dyeing of the hair can worsen split ends, as the chemicals penetrate hair shafts, leaving disaster in their wake. Preventing split ends is not as difficult and daunting as it may sound, but it does requires some basic hair care practices to keep your hair strong and lustrous.

Step 1

Trim your hair regularly to keep split ends at bay. According to Daily Glow, stylists suggest trimming your hair every six weeks to eliminate split ends from causing extensive damage to the rest of the hair shaft.

Step 2

Allow hair to air-dry, and use dry curlers to provide bounce and volume. Avoid heat styling every day, according to CareFair.com, as this causes additional stress on your hair, which in turn results in more damage and increased split ends. Also limit the use of styling aids that can dry out your hair.

Step 3

Shampoo your hair every other day instead of daily. Over-shampooing will dry the hair out by stripping it of essential oils needed to maintain hair health. According to Daily Glow, daily hair washing is OK if you have excessively oily hair.

Step 4

Tie your hair up with elastics that are coated or covered with fabric. Rubber bands and metal will pull the hair, causing stress damage. Coated and covered elastics prevent friction and pulling.

Step 5

Apply a deep-conditioning treatment to your hair weekly. According to Daily Glow, weekly deep-conditioning treatments can help moisturize your hair and prevent the ends from becoming brittle.

Step 6

Brush your hair when it's dry, not wet. Wet hair is weaker and more prone to breakage. According to Daily Glow, if you are prone to tangles, using a wide-toothed comb poses less threat to your tresses if you must comb your hair while it's wet.
