Boxing can damage the body in many ways, but the hands are components easily traumatized and often at risk. For a boxer, the hands are essential tools and protecting them is paramount. Wrapping hands is not enough. You must use the proper technique to ensure the bones of the hand stay safe. Wrapping your hands before training or fighting may take some practice. Once you perfect the process, wrapping will become second nature.

Step 1

Place the wrap with the correct side up. Many wraps utilize Velcro to secure them. Set the wrap so at the end of the roll, you do not need to twist it to fasten it. Look for a label or marking on the wrap that alerts you to the correct positioning, such as “This side up.”

Step 2

Hold your hand out with the palm facing downward and spread the fingers. Slip your thumb through the thumb loop if the wrap has one.

Step 3

Wrap the band three times around your wrist, pulling it tight enough so that the wrist feels secure and comfortable.

Step 4

Pull the roll up toward the thumb, wrapping over and around the thumb one time. Insert the wrap between the thumb and forefinger, then slide it under. Cover the thumb as completely as possible.

Step 5

Move the wrap from the top of the thumb across the backside of the hand, near the top of the wrist. The wrap will overlap with what is already covering the wrist area. Pull the wrap under the wrist and circle the thumb a second time. Repeat the same maneuver one more time, wrapping the thumb three times total.

Step 6

Circle around the thumb on the third turn and pull the band up diagonally to the knuckle of the pinky finger. Move the wrap over the outside of the hand and under the palm. Cover the last knuckle as you pull the wrap around to the palm.

Step 7

Slide the wrap over the inside of the hand, and pull it between the thumb and forefinger across the knuckles on the backside. Repeat this process to wrap the knuckles three times.

Step 8

Pull the wrap diagonally across the back of the hand toward the wrist. Circle the wrist and bring the wrap up on the other side toward the body.

Step 9

Insert the wrap between the middle and ring finger and pull in down toward the palm. Wrap the band around the thumb and wrap the knuckles again. Continue wrapping the knuckles to complete the role. Secure the wrap with the Velcro.
