Static in hair comes from the buildup of positive charges. According to School of Champions, when individual strands of hair accumulate a positive charge, they repel one another. The result is static or flyaway hair. There are many factors involved in the development of static. Weather and over drying certainly contribute to the problem. It may not be possible to eliminate static from hair entirely, but there are methods available to minimize the effect.
Step 1
Use a moisturizing shampoo. Static in hair may be the result of over drying. The website Hairfinder suggests you use a moisturizing product for daily shampooing. To avoid buildup, use a clarifying shampoo once or twice a month.
Step 2
Deep condition your hair with a hot oil treatment or deep conditioner. This will work to hydrate the strands and eliminate some of the static.
Step 3
Dry your hair with an ionic ceramic hair dryer. This design works to remove static from hair during the drying process.
Step 4
Comb your hair with a natural fiber brush or a metal comb. Plastic combs will increase the charge in hair. Change out the plastic for a product with natural bristles or metal tines.
Step 5
Remove static from clothing by using a dryer sheet or fabric softener when doing laundry. Your hair will pick up static from clothes especially if it is already dry. Taking some of the charge out of fabric can help reduce the static in your hair.
Step 6
Avoid alcohol-based hair products, such as gels. Alcohol will dry hair out and cause static. Read the labels and pick products that moisturize instead of dry.
