How to Eliminate Feminine Odor

Feminine odor may be a sign of vaginal infection or poor hygiene, particularly if the odor is strong. A mild odor, however, should be expected even in healthy women who bathe regularly, says the WomensHealth website. A "fishy" smell results most often from bacterial vaginosis, says the Mayo Clinic, but can also be caused by a sexually transmitted disease or other, less common factors such as cancer or physical abnormalities. Women with a strong odor should see a doctor, especially when it's accompanied by other symptoms, such as an unusual discharge or vaginal itching. Proper hygiene will keep normal feminine odor under control.

Step 1

Wash the vaginal area daily with warm water and mild soap. Any soap intended for bathing will work, but if you are sensitive, choose one without deodorants or other additions.

Step 2

Choose underwear made of cotton, rather than synthetic fabrics. Cotton allows air to circulate more freely, keeping you fresher.

Step 3

Change tampons or pads frequently during menstruation.

Step 4

Avoid douches, sprays, wipes and other products that promise to get rid of feminine odor. They may interfere with the vagina's natural balance, causing irritation and even infection.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild soap
  • Cotton underwear
