We are bombarded daily with advertisements claiming some product can increase our metabolism. While some products may be able to deliver on their promise, many have not been evaluated, and some are even dangerous. The correct way to increase your metabolism is to do so naturally, which involves more work than popping a pill. It requires desire and commitment to truly change your metabolism for the long term.

Step 1

Plan your meals carefully, and make sure you make good decisions. According to John Berardi, author of "The Metabolism Advantage," eating lean proteins such as turkey, fish and chicken breast is a key to increasing your metabolism. He also suggests that you serve your meal with healthful vegetables to balance the fat intake.

Step 2

Increase the amount of times you eat in a day. Louis-Sylvestre J, et al, states that studies have shown an increase number of healthy meals with smaller portion sizes will allow you to have a better metabolic profile. Your bodies reaction to a steady access of good nutrition is to burn more calories which increases your metabolism.

Step 3

Avoid alcohol, sugars and fats. Sugars and fats have a negative impact on metabolism by triggering the body to store more calories. Alcohol has a double effect of lowering your metabolism because it effects the liver, which is important in metabolism, and it also increases cravings for sugar and fats.

Step 4

Exercise regularly, and focus on building lean muscle. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, and targeting the increase in muscles will prompt your body to increase your metabolism to service the muscles' need for repair. Exercising before meals can stifle your appetite and allow your body to direct the location of incoming nutrition to building lean muscle.

Step 5

Drink plenty of water. According to the Mayo Clinic, each person should drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water a day. Drinking water allows your body to hydrate and flush out unwanted toxins. Not only does it increase metabolism, it also helps maintain a feeling of fullness.

Step 6

Reduce stress and get enough sleep. Stress plays a key role in your body and is responsible for weight gain and slow metabolism. Likewise, a lack of sleep will wreak havoc on your body and not allow the motivation for needed exercise.
