Senior day care programs offer a safe and comfortable environment for an aged person to spend the day. Also known as adult day care, the programs are designed to support those who have age-related physical or cognitive impairment, even if slight. The majority of participants in senior day care programs live with an adult child, a spouse or another relative. Even if the price of the program may seem prohibitive at first, consider the benefits, both to yourself and to the senior in your life.

Caregiver Respite

More than half the recipients of adult day care have some level of cognitive impairment, according to the National Adult Day Services Association. The family members with whom an impaired senior lives welcome the respite from full-time care when they enroll their loved one in a program. If you are a caregiver, you are well aware that the need for continuous vigilance and attention can cause both emotional and physical stress. Enrolling your loved one in a senior day care program gives a break for your own rejuvenation. Day care can also alleviate employed family members' concerns about leaving the senior alone during the work day.

Socialization

Interaction with other seniors at the day care facility becomes an integral part of the recipient's social life. Group activities, meal time and staff participation grant opportunities for a senior to make his own friends outside of the home. Recreation in the program is designed specifically to suit the senior's physical abilities and mental acuity, a responsibility that you, as a caregiver, may find overwhelming on a long-term basis.

Safety

As you go about your own tasks and activities, it's helpful to have the senior you care for in a location where their safety is of paramount importance. If she has Alzheimer's or another form of dementia, is confined to a wheelchair or is generally frail, the staff at the day care center can oversee her safety while you get on with your own business. Many centers are equipped with safety devices, gated areas and alarms, providing a secure environment you may not be able to without a constant watchful eye.

Health and Medication Monitoring

The staff at a senior day care center help you monitor the health and medications of the senior for whom you are the primary caregiver. Many of the programs have nurses and other health care professionals on staff and as visiting consultants. Their expertise can bring conditions to your attention that you may not have noticed before, but that indicate a change that needs further medical attention.
