Acne refers to a skin condition where the skin’s pores become blocked by sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria resulting in red raised bumps. These bumps are called comedones and may form whiteheads or blackheads. Whiteheads are comedones whose contents are covered by a thin layer of skin, while blackheads are comedones that become exposed to air, turning the contents black or brown in color through oxidation. Successful acne treatments are required to cure re-occuring acne flare ups, while eliminating acne’s underlying conditions.

Step 1

Cleanse your face twice daily with a gentle facial cleanser. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, general soaps and fragranced products can further irritate acne, therefore cleansers should not contain fragrance or other additives. Do not cleanse more than twice daily to avoid over drying of the skin.

Step 2

Shampoo your hair frequently to avoid transferrence of oils onto the skin. Oily hair is especially harsh on facial acne. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends pulling your hair back into a ponytail or wearing loose fitting headbands to eliminate cross contamination from your hair to your skin.

Step 3

Opt for oil free cosmetics labeled non comedogenic. These cosmetics contain no excess oils to block your pores and worsen acne nor do they promote acne flare ups. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, always remove make up at night before bed to allow your skin to breathe.

Step 4

Take all prescribed antibiotics as directed by your dermatologist. According to the Mayo Clinic, some cases of moderate to severe acne may require a course of antibiotics to fight inflammation and bacteria. Finish all medication even if acne is improving before the course of treatment is complete. This ensures that all bacteria are destroyed so that acne cannot return.

Step 5

Apply a topical acne cream to your face as directed on packaging insert. Depending on the strength of the cream, you may be required to only apply one time per day. Look for creams that contain benzoyl peroxide, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Benzoyl peroxide sloughs off dead skin cells and clears clogged pores by attacking bacteria and drying skin oils.

Step 6

Opt for dermabrasion to remove the outer layers of dead skin and clear out the pores. According to the Mayo Clinic, dermabrasion is used for more severe cases of recurring acne and acne scars. Dermabrasion utilizes a wire brush to resurface the skin and make blemishes less noticeable. In some cases, female patients may also be instructed to take an oral contraceptive to balance out hormones and prevent acne recurrence.
