There are several skating parks and rinks in the Asheville corner of North Carolina. Whether you are looking for an inline skating, skateboard or ice rink, the available skating facilities can help you have fun and get a vigorous workout.

Ice Rinks

The Asheville Civic Center offers an ice skating rink. The Civic Center Arena in the winter months is available both for public skating and event rental. It's open for public skating only in December and January; public skating sessions last for 90 minutes and cost $5 as of 2010.

Inline/Roller Skating

Inline and roller skating are much more accessible to residents and visitors of Asheville. Located right in the city's heart is Tarwheels Skateway. It is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Prices are adjusted based on the time of day you choose to go.

Scheduling a birthday party or other event? Wednesdays and Sundays are reserved specifically for private rentals. In addition to a rink where both roller skates and blades are available, Tarwheels has a snack bar and arcade.

Skate Parks

Across from the Civic Center in Asheville is the Food Lion Skate Park. Specific to skateboards and inline skates (rollerblades), the park is open daily and offers affordable daily or annual fees. Also available are helmet and pad rentals.

The Food Lion Skate Park features three main areas: the beginner area, "street" area (for intermediate skaters) and the "bowl" for the more advanced skaters. In total, the park offers approximately 17,000 square feet of skating space.

This park also offers summer camps for varying rates. The programs last approximately one week; they're offered to skaters who are 6 to 15 years old.

Outside Asheville

Skater's Choice, a rollerskating rink, is located in Hendersonville, North Carolina, about 30 minutes from Asheville.

Located about one hour away is the Zero Gravity Skate Park. This park in Brevard, North Carolina, is also designed for boards and inline skates, but this facility can also be rented out privately for bikes. Zero Gravity also offers beginner through advanced private lessons at $20 a lesson.

Considerations

The closest year-round ice skating rink is the Pavillion in Greenville, South Carolina, which is approximately two hours away. The Pavillion offers daily public skating, lessons and competitions for serious skaters. Greenville also has a figure skating club through the Pavillion.
