Body mass index (BMI) is a standardized measure that renders body mass in relation to height. It allows for the classification of a person as underweight, normal, overweight or one of the varying degrees of obese. The BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters (the units are kg/m2). If the weight and height are known in pounds and inches, respectively, the units can be converted to kilograms and meters in order to properly calculate the BMI.

Step 1

Measure your weight in pounds using a scale. Convert pounds to kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2.

Step 2

Ask your assistant to obtain your height in inches using the ruler, measuring tape or yard stick. Convert inches to meters by dividing your height in inches by 39.4.

Step 3

Multiply the result of Step 2 by itself.

Step 4

Divide the weight in kilograms, which is the result of Step 1, by the square of the height in meters, which is the result of Step 3, to obtain the BMI.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use online tools that will calculate your BMI using weight in pounds and height in inches (see Resources).
  • The BMI does not differentiate between increases in muscle mass and increases in fat mass. So people with a muscular physique may be improperly classified as overweight or obese.
