Any fisherman knows that he must be prepared whether he is going fishing for the morning or for two weeks. Particularly, you need to have the right bait for the fish you are trying to catch. Although you might catch some smallmouth using the same bait you would use for largemouth bass, your haul will be much better if you use the right bait.
Crayfish
Smallmouth bass like to forage in cool water, whereas largemouth bass like warmer water. Many types of smallmouth bass go after crayfish and some of its smaller crustacean cousins. Using crayfish in the early morning is usually a good recipe for successful smallmouth bass fishing. This is particularly true in southern areas, where crayfish are plentiful.
Frogs and Crickets
Crayfish are not always native to the habitat of the smallmouth bass, especially if you are not fishing in the South. You need to know what smallmouth feed on in the area where you are fishing. Successful smallmouth bass baits almost always include small frogs and crickets, wherever you are fishing.
Worms
Worms are a traditional bait for many fish, and smallmouth bass tend to go after this bait with abandon. You can use live worms on a gang hook, and you also can use artificial worms. Smallmouth bass generally swim upstream, so if you cast that way they probably will swim into your bait, and you can set the hook quickly.
